Apr. 4, 2025 - Matthew Sengphommachanh of the North Central College men's tennis team claimed his second career College Conference on Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Player of the Week award.
The Elgin, Ill., native earned a spotless record of 4-0 after the Cardinals took on Carroll College and Carthage College last week. North Central defeated the Pioneers 5-2 on Friday before taking down the Firebirds 5-2 on Saturday.
Teaming up with
Ramon Vilarroig Martinez at No. 1 doubles, Sengphommachanh and Vilarrroig Martinez earned a 6-3 win over Carroll's Daniel Ezcurra and Adrian Gomez. Sengphommachanh met Ezcurra on the court for the No. 2 singles match. Sengphommachanh won the first set 6-2 and was up 3-1 in the second set before the match ended as his opponent retired.
On Saturday, against the Firebirds, Sengphommachanh and Vilarrroig Martinez earned a nailbiting 7-6 win over Elios Brand and Myles Krzewinski. Then, Sengphommachanh brought the momentum into singles play. Sengphommachanh downed Francisco Silveira 6-4, 6-4.
North Central is back on the court Saturday, Apr. 5, at 10:30 a.m. when they host Millikin University at the Naperville Tennis Club.
