LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 18, 2025) — Members of the North Central College women's wrestling team, competing for Cardinal Wrestling Club, traveled to Louisville this past weekend to participate in USA Wrestling's Senior World Team Trials. Athletes had to qualify in advance and were vying for a spot in USA Wrestling's Final X event on June 14, with the opportunity to earn a place on the 2025 U.S. Senior National and World Teams.
Kendra Ryan (50 kg),
Sydney Petzinger (53 kg),
Jaslynn Gallegos (53 kg),
Alara Boyd (62 kg),
Shenita Lawson (76 kg), and
Yelena Makoyed (76 kg) all competed for Cardinal Wrestling Club after qualifying at last month's U.S. Open in Las Vegas, Nev.
Ryan advanced to the 50 kg final after defeating Titan Mercury Wrestling Club's Emily Shilson 10-1 in the semifinals. It was Ryan's second win over Shilson this season. Shilson is a five-time college national champion who competed for Augsburg University and McKendree University. In the final, Ryan faced top-seeded Erin Golston of the New York Athletic Club. Golston, a six-time U.S. National Team member and Pan American silver medalist, took an early lead with a first-period takedown. Ryan mounted a second-period comeback but ultimately fell 4-2. Her runner-up finish earned her a spot in Final X, where she will face Titan Mercury's Anaya Falcon for a place on the U.S. Senior National Team.
Petzinger and Gallegos both competed in the 53 kg bracket and met in the quarterfinals. Petzinger won the back-and-forth match 11-7, sending Gallegos to the consolation bracket, where she lost to Titan Mercury's Katie Gomez, a former Cadet World Champion and Junior World silver medalist. Petzinger then faced Titan Mercury's Felicity Taylor, a two-time NCWWC national champion, in the semifinals and lost by technical fall. In the consolation bracket, Petzinger defeated Life University's Salyna Shotwell by 10-0 technical fall, then pinned Gomez in the first period of the third-place match. The win secured her a spot in Final X, where she will face 2025 NCWWC national champion Sage Mortimer of Grand Valley State University.
Boyd opened the 62 kg bracket in the quarterfinals with a 10-4 win over Katerina Lange, a two-time NCWWC national champion. She then lost in the semifinals to Army WCAP's Adaugo Nwachukwu, a three-time NAIA national champion and world medalist. In the consolation bracket, Boyd defeated Titan Mercury's Marilyn Garcia 7-2 and then beat Lange again, this time 6-3, in the third-place match. Boyd will face Atreus Wrestling Club's Savannah Cosme at Final X for a spot on the U.S. Senior National Team.
At 76 kg, Lawson lost her opening match to Laker Wrestling Club's Marlynne Deede, a two-time NCWWC champion. She rebounded with a 4-2 win over Tiger Wrestling Club's Lilian Vergara but was eliminated after a 4-1 loss to Army WCAP's Tristan Kelly, the 2025 NCWWC national champion.
Makoyed advanced to the final with a fall over Texas Wesleyan's Ashley Lekas and a 7-0 win over Kelly. In the final, she faced Titan Mercury's Dymond Guilford, who scored a decisive four-point takedown in the first period. Makoyed's second-period rally fell short, and she lost 5-3. However, because she had already defeated third-place finisher Kelly, Makoyed earned a spot on the Senior National Team without needing to compete at Final X.
Ryan, Petzinger, and Boyd will join teammates
Amanda Martinez and
Bella Mir at Final X on June 14 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Ryan, Petzinger, Boyd, and Mir will compete for spots on the National Team, while Martinez will face three-time Olympic medalist Helen Maroulis for a place on the World Team and the chance to represent the U.S. at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, in September.
