BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (Feb. 28, 2009) - The North Central College men's track and field team kept its record in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Championship Meets perfect on Saturday, winning six events and shattering two meet records in claiming yet another CCIW trophy at Illinois Wesleyan University's Shirk Center.
The third-ranked Cardinals scored 222 points to easily outdistance fifth-ranked Augustana College's total of 174, maintaining their status as the only team to win a CCIW indoor crown. North Central has won each of the nine CCIW Indoor Championships that have been contested. The Cardinals' coaching staff was named the CCIW Coaching Staff of the Year, also for the ninth straight time.
Three of North Central's event victories came in the first day of competition on Friday.
Jake Winder prevailed in the pole vault with a clearance of 16 feet, 4 3/4 inches before traveling to the USA Track and Field Indoor National Championships in Boston, Mass., where he placed ninth on Saturday with a vault of 16'10 3/4".
Kyle Brady, who would go on to be named the CCIW's Track Athlete of the Meet, established the first of the Cardinals' two meet records, finishing first in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the line in 14 minutes, 40.62 seconds. North Central had the top three finishers in the event, as
Michael Spain was second in 14:43.51 and
John Lancaster came in third in 14:46.46. The Cardinals' distance medley relay team tasted victory as well, finishing in 10:17.20 to narrowly miss another meet record.
Greg Jackson posted a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash, with his time of 49.14 seconds improving his provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships. Jake Austin and
Jon Kaufmann took the top two spots in the 800-meter run, with Austin winning in 1:54.92 and Kaufmann placing second in 1:55.31, before Spain and Brady swept the first two places in the 3,000-meter run.
Spain's time of 8:25.84 obliterated the meet record by more than 10 seconds, but was just barely good enough to outrun Brady, who was clocked in 8:25.94. Fourth-place finisher
Dan Buys was also faster than the previous meet record, completing the race in 8:33.86.
Matt Borchardt placed second in both the pentathlon (3,368 points) and the high jump (6'5 1/2") for the Cardinals, who also got runner-up efforts from
Kyle Haste in the long jump (22'1"),
Tommy Robertson in the 200-meter dash (22.63), and the 4x400-meter relay team (3:20.19), which provisionally qualified for the national championships.
Earning his own provisional qualifying mark was
Jason Beer with a time of 4:14.88 in the mile run, which placed him third overall.
The Cardinals will be sending athletes to a pair of last-chance meets next weekend. North Central will be represented at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Karl Schlender Last Chance Meet on Friday, as well as the Iowa State University Cyclone Qualifier on Saturday.
