LOCKPORT, Ill. (Feb. 27, 2010)-- Matt Boguslawski and
Sam Sweeney scored a pair of doubles victories as the North Central College men's tennis team opened up its 2010 season on Saturday at the indoor courts at Challenge Fitness. The Cardinals edged Cornell College (Iowa) 5-4 in their opening game before falling 7-2 in the nightcap to the University of Saint Francis (Ill.).
Boguslawski and Sweeney captured the lone doubles victory for the Cardinals in the opener against Cornell (5-6), defeating Bronson Brassell and Garrett Russikoff 8-2 in No. 1 action.
The Cardinals rallied in singles competition, winning four of six to hold on for the team victory. Sweeney breezed past Brassell, 6-0, 6-1, in No. 1 action while Boguslawski claimed the, 6-2, 6-2, victory over Russikoff at No. 2.
Eric McKee edged John Mineck, 7-6 (4), 6-2, in No. 3 singles while
Josh Clay needed three sets to put away Brandon Wolff, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6, in No. 5 singles.
In the nightcap, Sweeney and Boguslawski once again claimed the Cardinals' lone win in doubles edging USF's Scott Surges and Luis Oliveira 9-8 (6) in No. 1 action.
In singles, Sweeney held the early lead against Jakub Szymanski before withdrawing due to injury in the decisive third set, giving the Saints No. 1 man the, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0, victory. Clay downed Erick Dobrzynski, 6-4, 6-3, in No. 5 action, finishing the day unbeaten in singles play.
North Central (1-1) returns to the courts on Saturday, March 13, facing Division I Western Illinois University in a dual match in Crystal Lake, Ill.
