ORLANDO, Fla. (Mar. 21, 2010)-- The North Central College men's tennis squad opened up its six-game Florida trip over the weekend, whitewashing the College of Staten Island (N.Y.), 9-0, on Saturday before falling, 7-2, to Grinnell College (Iowa) on Sunday.
Sam Sweeney, last week's College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Player of the Week, continued where he left off, blanking Staten Island's No. 1 man Konstantin Trofimovich, 6-0, 6-0, before knocking off Grinnell's Juan Carlos Perez, 6-1, 6-3. Perez had entered Sunday's match ranked eighth in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
In doubles, Sweeney and his partner
Matt Boguslawski continued their domination at the No.1 position, taking down the Dolphin's tandem of Trofimovich and Patrick Thomas, 8-0, before edging Grinnell's Perez and Dmitriy Glumov, 8-6. The Cardinals' top doubles squad has now won six straight matches, having yet to taste defeat this season.
Boguslawski downed CSI's Thomas, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles while
Chris Bennorth blanked Joseph Taranto, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles.
Eric McKee,
Josh Clay and
Naveed Heydari where all victorious in singles, winning matches at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively.
Bennorth and Heydari earned the 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles against the Dolphins while McKee and
Adam Ciccone posted the 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Cardinals (2-4) return to the courts tomorrow, taking on Colby College at 8 a.m.
