ORLANDO, Fla. (Mar. 22, 2010)-- Matt Boguslawski and
Sam Sweeney's win streak at No. 1 doubles came to a halt, Monday afternoon, as the North Central College men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches in the penultimate day of the team's spring break trip.
The Cardinals suffered a 5-4 defeat to Colby College (Maine) in the morning before closing out the day on the wrong end of a 7-2 decision against nationally-ranked Luther College (Iowa).
Against Colby, doubles proved to be the difference-maker as the Mules took two of three before the squad's split wins in singles competition. Boguslawski and Sweeney netted the Cardinals lone doubles victory, defeating the Mules' No. 1 tandem of Tommy Kimball and Phillip Zunshine, 8-5.
In singles, Sweeney won by default at No. 1 after Kimball succumbed to injury while
Chris Bennorth and
Josh Clay picked up wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, respectively. Bennorth bested Zunshine, 6-3, 7-6 (3), while Clay edged Robert Yee, 7-6 (6), 6-3.
Against 27th-ranked Luther, Boguslawski and Sweeney saw their seven-match win streak come to a close, falling, 8-6, to the region's eighth ranked doubles squad of Utsab Rijal and Scott Sunderstrom.
The two would exact revenge in singles with Boguslawski needing three sets to put away Mark Mateski, 2-6, 7-5, (12-10), at No. 2 singles while Sweeney toppled Harrison Whiteley, 7-6 (6), 6-0, in No. 1 action.
With the losses, North Central falls to 2-6 overall while the Colby Mules improve to 2-1 and the Luther Norse up their record to 14-5.
The Cardinals wrap up their spring break excursion tomorrow, taking on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 10 a.m. before facing Calvin College (Mich.) at 3 p.m.
