DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 19, 2011) - The North Central College men's basketball team lost the first game on its tour at the Daytona Beach Shootout on Monday, losing on a last-second shot to the University of Scranton, 64-62, at the ICI Center.
The Cardinals owned a nine-point lead with four minutes left in the contest, but fell victim to a 14-3 run down the stretch and dropped to 4-5 for the season.
Owning a 5-4 lead after five minutes of play, North Central yielded a 13-5 run and trailed, 17-10, with 8:21 left in the first half. The Cardinals' CJ Goldthree sank a three-pointer to launch the Cardinals on an 8-4 run, then made two straight baskets to give the Cardinals a 22-21 advantage with 3:50 left in the first half. North Central followed with seven unanswered points to take a 29-21 lead with 1:47 left before halftime, but Scranton (5-4) was able to narrow the gap to 33-28 by halftime.
Scranton closed the gap to 35-33 early in the second period, but Goldthree scored seven straight points to boost the Cardinals' advantage to 42-33 with 14:56 remaining. North Central owned an advantage as large as 13 points midway through the second half before Scranton rallied and got back into contention. Trailing, 62-56, with 2:49 to play, Scranton scored six straight points, tying the score on a tip-in by Ross Danzig with 58 seconds to play.
The Cardinals turned the ball over on their next possession, and Scranton's Tim LaVelle scored the game-winner on a layup with seven seconds left to seal the win.
Goldthree led North Central with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Landon Gamble scored 11 points and Kevin Gillespie and Vince Kmiec each scored 10. LaVelle led Scranton with 13 points in 23 minutes off the bench.
The Cardinals take on Bridgewater College (Va.) on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
