WARRENVILLE, Ill. (Oct. 27, 2012) - One of the longest-running traditions of excellence in collegiate athletics was extended Saturday at St. James Farm, as the North Central College men's cross country team claimed the team title at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships for the 39th consecutive year.
Coach Al Carius' third-ranked harriers claimed seven of the top 12 finishers and posted a winning score of 19 points, well ahead of 25th-ranked Wheaton (55) and 16th-ranked Augustana College (62). North Central has won every CCIW Championship meet that has been contested since 1974.
The Cardinals swept the top three individual positions, as Daniel Kerley claimed the individual title by covering the 8,000-meter (five-mile) course in 24 minutes, 33 seconds and John Crain and Yonatan Mascote followed in second (24:35) and third (24:36), respectively.
Roger Klein followed in sixth place (24:49) and Troy Kelleher finished seventh (24:53) to close out the Cardinals' scoring, while David Weber also cracked the top 10, placing ninth (24:58).
Kerley was honored as the CCIW's Athlete of the Year, while Kelleher, as the top-placing freshman in the field, was named the CCIW Freshman of the Year.
The Cardinals have two weeks before returning to competition at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championships, to be held Saturday, Nov. 10 at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winnecone, Wis. The University of WIsconsin-Oshkosh is the host of this year's regional meet. The men's race is set to begin at 11 a.m.
