JOLIET, Ill. (Sept. 12, 2012) - The North Central College men's golf team opened the 2012 fall season with a strong finish at the University of St. Francis Fall Classic on Tuesday, placing second out of 19 teams at Inwood Golf Course.
The Cardinals posted a team score of 308, finishing only behind the host Fighting Saints' total of 293 and one stroke ahead of College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) rival Elmhurst College.
North Central's contingent was led by the performance of
Shane Kunz, who shot a one over-par score of 72 to establish his best round as a collegian by five strokes and tie for third place in the individual standings. Kunz was two strokes off the pace of St. Francis' Martin Hetelle, the individual medalist.
The Cardinals'
Nick Stavropoulos placed 21st (77), while
Brian Kirhofer was 27th (78) and
Karl Schlichting and
Gavin Corrigan tied for 46th (81).
North Central participates in the Illinois Valley Community College Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Friday's first round will be held at Deer Park Country Club in Oglesby, Ill., while Saturday's second round will take place at Oak Ridge Golf Course in Seneca, Ill.
