Apr. 9, 2013 - North Central College men's track and field athlete Zach Heerspink has been recognized as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Field Event Athlete of the Week for Apr. 1-7.

Heerspink received the distinction on the strength of his performance in the Chicagoland Outdoor Championships at Lewis University on Friday and Saturday. He won the long jump with a personal-best leap of 23 feet, 8 3/4 inches, then cleared 6'6 3/4" to win the high jump as well.

Heerspink currently ranks second nationally among NCAA Division III athletes in the long jump and fifth in the high jump this outdoor season. He is a five-time national championship qualifier in the high jump, having earned All-America honors twice.

North Central has now received CCIW Athlete of the Week awards for two straight weeks. John Crain and Nick Fridrich were selected as the conference's top-performing athletes last week.

North Central goes to Wheaton College for the Wheaton Quad on Friday.
