Apr. 7, 2015 - North Central College men's track and field athletes Travis Morrison and Luke Winder have been honored as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Athletes of the Week for Mar. 30-Apr. 5 following their nation-leading performances in the Cardinals' first meet of the outdoor season.
Morrison and Winder, competing for the first time since claiming individual national titles at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in March, were recognized for their efforts in the Wheaton College Invitational on Wednesday and Thursday, at which the Cardinals placed first in a nine-team field.
Morrison won the 10,000-meter run in a personal-best time of 30 minutes, 10.62 seconds to earn the CCIW's Running Event Athlete of the Week award. His time currently stands as the fastest among all Division III athletes this season and was more than 40 seconds faster than his closest pursuer on Thursday. A two-time national championship qualifier in the 10,000, Morrison was a national champion at 5,000 meters and a CCIW champion and All-American at 3,000 meters during the past indoor season.
Winder was named the CCIW's Field Event Athlete of the Week after winning Wednesday's pole vault competition with a clearance of 17 feet, 3/4 inch which also ranks first nationally among Division III competitors and establishes a new North Central outdoor freshman record. Winder won the CCIW and national individual championships in the pole vault during the indoor campaign.
The Cardinals compete at the Chicagoland Outdoor Championships, hosted by the College of DuPage, on Friday and Saturday.
