Jan. 18, 2019 - Its initial travel plans foiled by severe weather, the North Central College men's track and field team instead chose to host a rare dual meet at Al B. Carius Track on Friday, as the No. 2-ranked Cardinals posted a 99-54 victory over the University of St. Francis.
North Central won nine of the 16 events and swept the top two spots in seven. Claiming a pair of wins was Peyton Piron, who prevailed in the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.53 seconds before teaming with Maceo Findlay, Michael Stanley and Gavin Cernek to win the 4-by-400-meter relay in 3:21.81.
Gabe Pommier won the mile run in a personal-best time of 4:13.93 to move in the No. 10 spot on North Central's all-time list indoors, while Brendon Sebastian's winning time of 1:23.66 in the 600-meter run stands as a new track record as it was contested for the first time in the Cardinals' home facility.
North Central made it a clean sweep of the distance events, as Matt Norvell won the 3,000-meter run (8:31.26) and the distance medley relay team of Ethan Rowe, Nate Newson, Andrew Fearn and Parker Rankin ran uncontested and finished in 12:46.37. First-place finishes in the field events came from Luke Winder in the pole vault (17 feet, one inch), Vince Olejniczak in the 35-pound weight throw (47'9") and Elijah Green in the shot put (45'11.75").
The Cardinals travel to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater next Friday for the Squig Converse Invitational. Competition is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
