ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (Nov 14, 2021) – Back at the Saukie Golf Course for the third time this season, this time accompanied by gray skies and brisk temperatures, the North Central College women's cross country team turned in an 11th place finish out of 24 teams at the NCAA Division III Midwest Region Championship while
Jenna Fiore punched her ticket to the National Championship.
The weather did little to jostle senior Jenna Fiore, on Saturday as she ran just two seconds shy of her season's best performance clocking a time of 22 minutes and 26.3 seconds to finish 17th overall in the 188-person field. Julianne Billings ran her fastest time of the season, 23 minutes and 17.1 seconds to finish 50th.
Madzia Myrda -- still hot from her performance at last week's Red/White open -- clocked a personal best of 23 minutes and 53 seconds to finish 75th. Allie Ganser (24:04.8), Rachael Vaccaro (24:05.1), and Julia Benes (24:06.8) crossed the line in a pack finishing 88th, 89th, and 91st, respectively with a Millikin runner snuck in the middle. Hannah Kirby (25:09.4) finished in 124th to round out the Cardinals' top-seven.
North Central finished 11th as a team with 312 points. Wartburg College was the Regional Champion team with 34 points, followed by Washington University in second with 43 points. University of Chicago (71), Loras College (163) and Elmhurst University (193) rounded out the top-five teams.
While the winning team from each region receives an automatic bid to the National Championship, followed by a committee decision of 22 additional At-large bids, there are 70 opportunities for individuals based on their finish at their respective regional championships. Fiore was the second-highest finisher at the Midwest Championship outside of a qualifying team which earned her an individual bid to the National Championship.
Fiore heads to Louisville, Ky. on Nov. 20 for the NCAA Division III National Championship. The women's race is set for 11 a.m. (CT).
