Jan. 3, 2022 - North Central College senior guard Matthew Helwig has been named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week for games played Dec. 20-Jan. 2.
Helwig's honor is the first for a Cardinal this season and comes after North Central went 2-1 with victories at Kalamazoo College (84-73) and Olivet College (88-70) before an 89-84 overtime loss to Hope College in the RDV Sportsplex Classic in Orlando, Florida. The Cardinals' scheduled Dec. 30 game against Central College was cancelled.
Helwig led North Central in scoring in all three games, averaging 31.0 points per contest including a 41-point outburst on 14 of 22 shooting against Olivet. Helwig also averaged a team-best 8.0 rebounds per game and enjoyed perfect 25 of 25 accuracy at the free-throw line. He currently ranks first in the CCIW and fifth among all NCAA Division III players in scoring at 27.1 points per game while also ranking second in the CCIW in free-throw percentage (.932), fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.433), sixth in rebounds (6.8 per game) and seventh in assists (3.0).
