- Hitting its stride as the indoor postseason looms on the horizon, the North Central College men's track and field team enjoyed an evening full of high-level performances in Friday's F. Lee Slick Invitational at Al B. Carius Track.

The Cardinals totaled 143 points in the seven-team meet to finish second behind Lewis University's first-place score of 175, though the hosts did finish 3.5 points ahead of the No. 9-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

North Central achieved four first-place finishes, including a sweep of the top three positions in the mile run. Julian Higueros charged away from the field to win in an eight-second personal best of four minutes, 13.79 seconds. Higueros' time falls just outside the Cardinals' all-time top 10 and ranks 27th-fastest among NCAA Division III competitors this season. Max Svienty clocked an eight-second personal best as well to place second (4:18.91), while James McGlashon finished third in 4:19.41 to narrowly improve upon a personal best set in last week's Pat Heenan Invitational.

Jamauri Spivery emerged with the win in the 60-meter dash, equaling his North Central record with a time of 6.87 seconds. Gavin Carr cleared a career-best height of 4.65 meters (15 feet, three inches) in the pole vault to win the competition and move up to No. 28 nationally, while Drew Guimond led an uncontested North Central contingent in the 5,000-meter run (15:45.81).

Trevor LaMirande knocked 15 seconds off his previous best time to place second in the 3,000-meter run (8:40.03), while Anthony Zajac's improvement of more than three feet to 46'4" (14.12m) yielded a third-place finish in the 35-pound weight throw. Also placing third were Riley Hughes in the shot put (14.15m, 46'5.25") and Nick Janca in the high jump (1.89m, 6'2.25").

The Cardinals travel to Carthage College's Tarble Athletic & Recreation Center Friday and Saturday for the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Indoor Championship. Winners of the last four CCIW indoor meets and 19 of 20 overall, North Central was voted the favorite to win this year in the annual Pre-Championship Coaches' Poll.
