Gavin Carr leapt into contention for a spot in next month's national championships Friday at the First Chance Invitational, one of eight first-place finishes for the Cardinals in their first home meet of the outdoor season.
Carr's winning clearance of 15 feet, five inches (4.70 meters) is an outdoor best by 4.75 inches and moves the senior into 13th on the NCAA Division III national list in the event. Also winning field events Friday were high jumper
Nick Janca-Schmitt (6'2", 1.88m) and shot putter
Riley Hughes (47'5.25", 14.46m).
Kevin Dixon,
Erik Musgrave,
Jahron Williams and
Jamauri Spivery won the 4-by-100-meter relay (42.94 seconds), and Musgrave also won the 400-meter hurdles (55.26) while Spivery placed first in the 100-meter dash (10.94). The Cardinals took the top four places in the 5,000-meter run, as
Julian Higueros (14:59.43) was followed in rapid succession by
Braden Nicholson (15:03.57),
Jacob Kluckhohn (15:03.82) and
James McGlashon (15:05.38).
Drew Guimond's winning time of 31:09.43 in the 10,000-meter run is a 58-second personal-best and secured an 11-second victory.
AJ Lehman placed second in the 200- and 400-meter dashes (23.21, 50.46), establishing lifetime bests in both events, while
Max Svienty's outdoor debut time of 3:54.26 achieved a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter run.
The Cardinals compete in the Wheaton College Invitational Saturday, Apr. 23.
