WHEATON, Ill. (Apr. 25, 2022) - A virtual preview of next month's College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Outdoor Championship yielded exciting returns for the North Central College men's track and field team, as the Cardinals placed first among 10 teams in the Wheaton College Don Church Twilight Meet.
North Central totaled 177 points, while the host Thunder finished second (138) and Carthage College placed third (113). Seven of the CCIW's nine teams were in the field.
The Cardinals won five events and saw a 25 year-old record broken, as
Jamauri Spivery won the 100-meter dash in a time of 10.71 seconds to establish a new North Central wind-legal standard. The previous mark of 10.72 was set by North Central Athletic Hall of Famer David Thompson '99 in 1997. Thompson still holds the Cardinals' all-conditions record with a wind-aided time of 10.56 achieved in 1998.
North Central's
James McGlashon now ranks 13th among NCAA Division III competitors after winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a season-best time of 9:13.76. The Cardinals swept the top four places in the 5,000-meter run as
Connor Riss (14:55.78), was followed across the line by
Max Svienty (15:00.72),
Drew Guimond (15:03.25) and
Julian Higueros (15:09.84).
Logan Tanttu finished first in the 800-meter run (1:55.65) with
Juan Castro following in third (1:57.33).
Erik Musgrave claimed first place in the 110-meter hurdles (15.96) and finished second in the 400-meter hurdles (54.57). Also claiming second-place finishes were
Nick Janca-Schmitt in the high jump (6'5.50", 1.97m) and
Gavin Carr in the pole vault (15'1", 4.60m), while additional third-place points came from
Riley Hughes in the shot put (50'8.25", 15.45m) and
Yasmani Rojas in the javelin throw (147'2", 44.87m).
The Cardinals will send a group to the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, this weekend while also competing in the Elmhurst University Invitational, which will be held at Wheaton Friday.
