Jan. 10, 2025 – The North Central College women's track and field team achieved their first team victory of the new year in their annual Cardinal Opener at the Al. B Carius Track.
North Central sealed a final score of 230 points with the University of Chicago following in second with 193 points. The next competitor, the Milwaukee School of Engineering trailed at 93 points with Concordia University Chicago in fourth (12), Benedictine University in fifth (10), and Lawrence University at sixth (8).
The Cardinals snagged six total wins throughout the evening including a clean sweep of all competitive heights in the pole vault between
Gwen Berenyi in first (3.56 meters, 11 feet 8 inches),
Natalie Johnson in second (3.22m, 10' 6.75"),
Ariana Rivera in third (2.92m, 9' 7"), Jillian Beneke in fourth (2.77m, 9' 1"), Lily Wintergerst in fifth (2.77m, 9' 1"), and
Brynn Schlaht in sixth (2.32m, 7' 7.25"). The long jump saw
Faith Ladin claim second with 5.41m (17' 9") to enter a three-way tie for tenth in the program's top ten list with
Katelyn McCann following behind (5.15m, 16' 10.75"). Abbie Layne locked down first in the triple jump with 10.69m (35' 0.9") while
Zainab Maiyaki (10.23m, 33' 6.75"), Elianna Keyes (10.20m, 33' 5.57"), and Leona Agyemang (10.13m, 33' 2.81") followed behind. Representing North Central in the high jump was
Pola Kubrak in third (1.50m, 4' 11") and Paulina Stachura in fifth (1.45m, 4' 9").
For the running events, freshman Isabella Valentin led the way in the 60-meter hurdle with a quick 9.63 seconds while
Anna Cotter (9.64), Charlotte Rossi (9.85), and
Brigit Doran (10.14) kept pace behind her.
Lindsey Novak snagged a first place finish in the 200-meter dash with a fast 25.16 second finish while
Kyla Miller took third (26.98). In the 400-meter dash, Novak also claimed a second place finish with 57.86 seconds.
Allie Dockins led the Cardinals in the 60-meter dash clocking in at 8.07 seconds for second place while Miller (8.16), Svetlozara Uvakova (8.24), and Kyra Spencer (8.26) followed. Olivia Durbin turned in a fifth place finish in the 800-meter run (2:35.27) while the mile run had
Julia Benes claim fourth (5:27.45). North Central took three of the top four finishes in the 3000-meter run with Benes snatching second (11:05.37),
Lily Anderson taking third (11:17.45), and
Marissa Magana obtaining fourth (11:18.79). The Cardinals' combined effort in the 4x400-meter relay had Keyes, Zoe Ulaszek, Valentin, and Rossi take second with a finish of 4:29.40.
