July 17, 2025 – North Central College men's basketball welcomes home Alex Sorenson '18/M'23 as head coach
Vince Kmiec '14/M'17 has announced him as the program's new assistant coach. Sorenson returns to North Central after two years spent coaching at Loras College.
"Bringing Alex back to North Central will help continue the trajectory of our program," said Kmiec. "He is an individual who has done nothing but win – both as a player and a coach – in our program and at Loras College. I expect his passion and fire for the game to shine through and help influence our student-athletes to strive for the same greatness he achieved at NCC. He will take on new responsibilities this time around, and I am excited to see him chase his dreams while helping our program reach its goals in the process."
An everyday starter for the Cardinals, Sorenson helped lead North Central to the NCAA Division III Tournament in each of his three seasons. He was a three-time All-CCIW First Team selection and earned D3hoops.com Third Team All-American status in the 2017-18 season. Sorenson finished his three-year stint with the Cardinals ranking in the top 10 for career points scored (1,443), field goals made (594), points per game (17.2), rebounds (731), and is the all-time block leader with 146. He also set a single-game record for most points scored with 54 against Robert Morris-Chicago on Dec. 30, 2017.
Following his collegiate career, Sorenson returned to North Central as a graduate assistant for the men's basketball program where he helped coach the Cardinals to two winning seasons. He then went on to coach full time as an assistant at Loras College. With Sorenson on staff, the Duhawks compiled a 41-15 overall record in two seasons, won the 2024 American Rivers Conference Tournament Championship, and made an appearance in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Sorenson coached for the Midwest Prospect Academy in Peoria and the M14 Hoops Training Academy in Aurora.
Sorenson completed his bachelor's degree in marketing and minor in accounting in 2018 before earning his master's in higher education leadership from North Central in 2023.
