WHEATON, Ill. (Oct. 29, 2008) -- Wheaton College showed why they are the two-time defending national champions, scoring five first half goals to cruise to the 7-0 win over North Central College on Wednesday night in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin women's soccer match at Joe Bean Stadium.
The Thunder wasted little time getting on the board, scoring three minutes into the game with Taryne Lee slipping the ball past Cardinal goalkeeper Elise Manzie (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Central) off a Ali Kopelman assist. The goal snapped Manzie's shutout streak at 231 minutes without a goal, a streak that spanned four games and included two complete game shutouts. Kari Klynstra would strike in the 19th minute for the game's second goal before Lee would net two goals in a four minute span to complete the hat trick. Erin Hodina ended the first half scoring with a goal in the 40th minute, giving the 13-time CCIW Champions the 5-0 lead at the break, outshooting North Central 16-1.
In the second half, Carrie Kishaba would net both goals for the Thunder, scoring in the 77th and 90th minutes.
Elise Manzie recorded 10 saves on the night, logging in all 90 minutes between the posts. Her 10 saves was one short of a season-high. Manzie recorded 11 saves in an early season non-conference loss to Aurora University. Ingrid Erickson, Karly Olson and Justine Morey all shared time in goal for the Thunder to combine for the shutout. Erickson made the start and logged in the games first 45 minutes while Olson and Morey both saw time in the second half. The three keepers each made one save apiece.
With the loss, North Central falls to 6-7-4 overall and 0-5-1 in conference action while Wheaton improves to 15-3-1 and 5-2 in CCIW play. The Cardinals return to the pitch on Sunday, November 2, when the team takes on Carthage College at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium to close out the 2008 season. The game against Carthage was originally scheduled for September 24, but a lightning delay after 66 minutes had been played forced the game to be replayed at a later date.
