Nov. 2, 2008 – An own goal in the 87
th minute, derailed the North Central College upset attempt of 22
nd-ranked Carthage College, falling 2-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin women's soccer finale for both teams at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
Laura Petersen (Jr., Herscher, Ill./Herscher) netted the team's lone goal, her third of the season.
The Lady Reds opened up the scoring eight minutes before halftime, with Paige Land finding the back of the net off a Devon Wilfling corner kick. Carthage would take the 1-0 lead into halftime, outshooting North Central 10-4.
In the 59th minute, a Petersen header off a Brittany Jones (Jr., Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) corner kick knotted the game at one apiece. The team's would trade scoring chances until the 87th minute when a misplayed Cardinal clearance resulted in an own goal to give the Lady Reds the 2-1 advantage. Both teams saw several second half chances with Carthage holding a slim 7-6 advantage in shots.
Elise Manzie (Jr., Naperville, Ill./Central) recorded nine saves in goal for the Cardinals, absorbing the loss while Lindsey Bollmann had five saves to pick up the win for Carthage. Both keepers logged in all 90 minutes in goal. Manzie ended the year allowing only 18 goals, falling one shy of her own school-record of 17 set during the 2006 season.
The game was slated to be the conference opener for both teams on September 24, but a lightning delay after 66 minutes of play forced the game to be replayed Sunday. Carthage held a 1-0 lead in the suspended game, but per NCAA rules the game was replayed from the start.
With the loss, North Central ends their season with a 6-8-4 overall record and a 0-6-1 mark in CCIW play while the nationally-ranked Lady Reds improve to 17-2 overall and 5-2 in conference action. Despite the loss, the Cardinals set a school-record on Sunday, allowing just 26 goals on the season to break the old mark of 30 set in 1995 and 2007.
