WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (Oct. 1, 2014) - The North Central College men's golf team turned in a 20th-place finish in a 28-team field at the NCAA Division III Midwest Region Classic, held Monday and Tuesday at Trappers Turn Golf Club.
The Cardinals posted an opening-round score of 347 on Monday, sitting 22nd in the field. North Central was one of many teams which took advantage of improved playing conditions on Tuesday, improving by 33 strokes to a 314 in the second round to post its third-best competitive round of the fall and finish with a 36-hole total of 661.
Central College (Iowa) had the top three individual finishers and won the event with a score of 584. David Watson won the individual title iwth a one under-par total of 143, finishing two strokes ahead of teammates Clay Curwin and Desmond Stoll. Eric Gruber led North Central by placing 52nd in the 140-man field with a score of 160. After an opening-round 85, Gruber improved 10 strokes to a career-best 75 on Tuesday.
Lincoln Slagel placed 77th for the Cardinals (166), while Glenn Miller shot 167, including a second-round 76, to place 82nd. Raymond Cepele completed North Central's scoring by carding a 171 to place 99th.
The Cardinals conclude their fall schedule by competing in the Benedictine University Eagle Invitational on Sunday at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge.
