WEST DUNDEE, Ill. (Sep. 7, 2014) -
Posting a greatly-improved effort over its first tournament of the fall, the North Central College men's golf team turned in a particularly strong second round and collected an eighth-place finish in a 16-team field in the Carthage College Tim Kopka Memorial Invitational at Randall Oaks Country Club Friday and Saturday.

The Cardinals' 36-hole total of 620 strokes was 35 lower than their score at Tuesday's Aurora University Invitational. After an opening-round 313 left it in ninth place on Friday, North Central improved to a 307 on Saturday to move past Aurora and into eighth place overall. The host Red Men won the event with a score of 588, 13 strokes better than the runner-up University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Wisconsin-Stout's Kraig Joy cruised to a five-stroke win in the individual competition, carding back-to-back two under-par rounds of 69. His 36-hole score of 138 was the only below-par round in the field. Felix Valentin paced North Central for the second straight tournament, turning in identical rounds of 76 on both days and placing 15th in the 91-man field.

The Cardinals' Lincoln Slagel placed 25th with 154, shooting 77 on both days, while Eric Gruber was 37th with 157. Glenn Miller rounded out North Central's scoring by placing 54th with 163. After an opening-round 88, Miller bounced back with a second-round total of 75 which is the Cardinals' lowest individual round thus far this fall and was bettered by only 10 golfers in the field Saturday.

North Central is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Wedgewood Golf Course in Joliet for the University of St. Francis Invitational, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
