Jan. 27, 2015 - North Central College men's track and field athlete Luke Winder has been voted one of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin's (CCIW) Athletes of the Week for the second straight time, while teammate Travis Morrison joins him as one of this week's honorees. The CCIW announced this week's selections on Tuesday.
Winder was named the CCIW's top-performing field-event athlete for the second straight week after placing first in the pole vault in Friday's Cardinal Opener at Al B. Carius Track. Winder's clearance of 17 feet, one inch, broke the North Central freshman record he set just one week earlier and ranks as the best performance by any NCAA Division III athlete in the event this season. Winder is the 10th Cardinal to surpass the 17-foot mark in the pole vault and the seventh to do so indoors.
Morrison was selected as the conference's top running-event athlete after he won the 5,000-meter run at the Cardinal Opener, finishing with a time of 14 minutes, 26.70 seconds which established a new track record and also leads all Division III runners in 2015. He now ranks 10th all-time in the event at North Central.
The Cardinals have swept both of the CCIW's awards so far this season. Richard Ruske was the CCIW's honoree for running events last week after breaking the North Central varsity record in the 1,000-meter run at the Grand Valley State University Mike Lints Alumni Open.
No. 5-ranked North Central travels to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday for the Squig Converse Invitational. Competition is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
