USTFCCCA Press Release

June 2, 2016 - North Central College men's track and field athlete Luke Winder has been voted the NCAA Division III National Field Athlete of the Year for the 2016 outdoor season by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). This season's National Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year honorees were announced Thursday.

Winder was voted the top-performing male field-event athlete throughout all of Division III after completing a second straight sweep of the national indoor and outdoor pole vault championships this past weekend at the Division III Outdoor Championships in Waverly, Iowa. He cleared 17 feet, 4 1/2 inches to secure his fourth straight title and cap off a season which saw him take sole possession of the North Central outdoor record and the No. 1 spot on the Division III all-time list with a clearance of 18'1" at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships and clear at least 17 feet in every single competition. He owns the eighth-best collegiate mark in the event this season, regardless of division.

In March, Winder won his second straight indoor national title with a meet-record clearance of 18'1 1/2", establishing a new national-meet record. He was voted the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year this outdoor season for the second straight year and twice named the USTFCCCA's National Athlete of the Week.

He is the fourth Cardinal to receive National Athlete of the Year honors from the USTFCCCA, joining outdoor honorees Dan Mayer (1994) and Michael Spain (2011) and indoor recipient Jake Winder (2010).
