Jan. 26, 2019 - Despite competing in limited numbers, the North Central College men's track and field team was still able to advance its efforts to position itself for success at the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships later this winter at Friday's Squig Converse Invitational. The meet was hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Kachel Fieldhouse.
The No. 1-ranked Cardinals posted a first-place finish in the distance medley relay, as Michael Anderson, Peyton Piron, Brendon Sebastian and Gabe Pommier finished in 10 minutes, 21.82 seconds to post the fastest time by a Division III quartet in the event thus far this season. North Central currently owns the two fastest times nationwide, as the team of Chris Buechner, Gavin Cernek, Jonah Penningroth and Nolan McKenna were close behind on Friday in 10:22.56.
Cernek, Sebastian, Piron and Michael Stanley also teamed up to place second in the 4-by-400-meter relay in 3:24.07, giving the Cardinals a second performance among the nation's top 10. North Central also got second-place finishes from Kyle LeBlanc in the high jump (a season-best clearance of six feet, 6.75 inches) and Bjorn Shroda in the 5,000-meter run (15:31.30).
Casey Wood turned in a personal-best mark of 15'2.25" to finish third in the pole vault, while Izaiah Webb cleared 14'2.50" to place fifth. Webb also achieved a fourth-place showing in the triple jump (44'10.25").
The Cardinals also sent pole vaulters Luke Winder and Dylan Kuipers to compete against an otherwise all-NCAA Division I field at the Indiana University Relays. Winder tied a season best with a mark of 17'6.50" to place third, while Kuipers came in eighth at 15'3".
North Central travels to Bourbonnais to compete in the Olivet Nazarene University Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 2. Competition at the Perry Center is set to get under way at 10:00 a.m.
