ST. LOUIS (Mar. 30, 2019) - Competing on a pair of fronts to open the outdoor campaign, the North Central College men's track and field team enjoyed a solid start to a new season as it made its mark on the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, California and the Washington University in St. Louis Invitational.
Dhruvil Patel accepted an invitation to compete in the invitational section of the 10,000-meter run at Stanford on Friday and delivered a signature performance, finishing 16th overall in a time of 28 minutes, 50.87 seconds to post a 57-second personal best. The defending NCAA Division III national champion in the event turned now ranks as the third-fastest in Division III history and the second-fastest ever at North Central.
The rest of the squad traveled to St. Louis and opened the weekend with
Matt Osmulski,
Nolan McKenna and
Matt Norvell placing fourth (30:31.79), fifth (30:34.08) and sixth (30:42.16), respectively, out of 94 finishers in the 10,000 on Friday. On Saturday, as windy, rainy conditions prevailed, the Cardinals totaled 78 points before withdrawing from competition as the weather grew more severe, placing fourth in the field. The host Bears won the meet with 174 points, followed by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (128) and Monmouth College (96).
Peyton Piron won the 400-meter dash on Saturday in a time of 49.20 seconds and teamed with
Nate Bailey,
Michael Stanley and
Avante Rivers for a second-place showing in the 4-by-100-meter relay (42.71).
Michael Anderson placed second in the 1,500-meter run (4:02.88), followed by
Chris Buechner in fourth (4:04.79) and
Jonah Penningroth in fifth (4:06.93).
Rivers added a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.14), as did
Brendon Sebastian in the 800-meter run (2:02.56).
Ben Andreas placed fourth in the long jump (19'5.25"), while fifth-place points cam from
Kyle Hilton in the 110-meter hurdles (15.58),
Liam Sullivan in the shot put (43'10.50") and
Vince Olejniczak in the hammer throw (149'4").
The Cardinals compete in the Wheaton College Invitational on Saturday. Competition at McCully Stadium is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
