WHEATON, Ill. (Apr. 6, 2019) - A clean sweep of the first-place finishes in the jumping events helped the North Central College men's track and field team achieve a first-place finish in the Wheaton College Invitational on Saturday, as the Cardinals prevailed by nearly 50 points at McCully Stadium.
No. 1-ranked North Central scored 191 points to finish well clear of the second-place Unviersity of Chicago's total of 142, while Hope College was a distant third with 82.
Heading the charge was
Izaiah Webb, who turned in first-place efforts in the pole vault (15 feet, three inches) and the triple jump (45'4.25") to contribute 20 points toward the Cardinals' effort.
Kyle LeBlanc won the high jump with a clearance of 6'6.75", while
Javon Kunkel took first in the long jump with a mark of 22'7.75".
Michael Anderson won the 1,500-meter run in three minutes, 54.29 seconds and led a 1-2-3 sweep in the event as
Nolan McKenna finished second (3:55.04) and
Chris Buechner came in third (3:57.95).
Gavin Cernek placed first in the 400-meter hurdles (55.93) and
Nate Bailey,
Michael Stanley,
Avante Rivers and
Peyton Piron won the 4-by-100-meter relay (42.05).
Other second-place points came from
Brendon Sebastian in the 800-meter run (1:55.94),
Zach Chapman in the 10,000-meter run (31:48.21) and
Zach Michael in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:48.55). Also placing third were Rivers in the 100 (11.07), Stanley in the 200 (22.17),
Cameron Benes in the 800 (1:56.82),
Kyle Hilton in the 110-meter hurdles (15.94),
Erik Musgrave in the 400-meter hurdles (56.68),
Tim Bertulis in the steeplechase (9:54.45),
Liam Sullivan in the shot put (46'10.25") and the 4-by-400-meter relay team of Cernek, Sebastian, Hilton and
Maceo Findlay (3:22.24).
The Cardinals take part in the Benedictine University Eagle Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
