Oct. 20, 2025 — Representing the Palestinian National Baseball Team, North Central College baseball player Yacoub Rayan competed in the 31st Asian Baseball Championships, held Sept. 22–29 at Pingtan International Baseball Stadium in China.

"The most memorable part of the experience was meeting and connecting with people from all over the world," Rayan said. "Whether it was chatting with another player or an umpire at second base, sharing dinner with teammates and coaches at the hotel, or battling in late-night ping pong matches, we bonded over our love for our countries and the game of baseball. Thanks to social media and the unique experience we shared, we're now forever connected."

Rayan started all five games at shortstop and pitched three innings in Palestine's 7–3 victory over the Philippines. After a loss to Chinese Taipei, Palestine bounced back with a 5–2 win over Hong Kong. In that game, Rayan scored a run, collected one hit, drew three walks, and stole a base. Palestine finished fifth overall with a 2–3 record.

"It's an immense honor to be part of a group that gets to compete on the national stage for something deeper than baseball," Rayan said. "Our country represents our heritage, culture, and identity, and I'm proud to connect two things that mean so much to me."

Rayan's journey to the national team began at age 15. The Palestinian National Team, founded by Mahmoud Tafesh in 2017, played an exhibition in Chicago in October 2022. Rayan was invited to try out by the General Manager and coaches Ozzie and Oney Guillén. He started at second base, made several plays, and recorded two hits. He continued training with the team until becoming eligible at age 18 to compete in international tournaments.

The 2026 Cardinal baseball season is scheduled to begin in late February. The official schedule will be posted on northcentralcardinals.com once finalized.
