WHEATON, Ill. (Apr. 8, 2017) - Bolstered by one of the nation's top performances to date in the hammer throw, the North Central College women's track and field team departed the Wheaton College Invitational on Saturday with a sixth-place finish.
The Cardinals scored 65.83 points in the meet. The University of Chicago placed first overall with 166.50, followed by the host Thunder (154) and 21st-ranked Carthage College (145.33).
North Central's
Kayla Etherton, a national championship qualifier last spring in the hammer, won the event on Saturday with a distance of 180 feet, which ranks fourth nationally among NCAA Division III competitors in the event this season. Etherton also placed third in the javelin throw (100'5").
Courtney Meyer cleared 11'0 3/4" to place second in the pole vault, while
Lexi Wilkinson turned in an outdoor personal-best mark of 35'6 1/2" to place third in the triple jump.
Tori Capozziello clocked a time of four minutes, 51.19 seconds to finish fourth in the 1,500-meter run, and
Meghan Coggins was timed in 1:07.41 placing fourth in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Cardinals finished fifth in both relay events. Coggins,
Kyley Vicik,
Bethany Bachmann and
Brianna Kramer finished the 4-by-100-meter relay in 51.54 seconds, and Bachmann, Capozziello,
Ashley Buado and
Allison Hartman were timed in 4:13.98 in the 4-by-400-meter relay. Hartman also placed fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:01.11).
North Central competes in the Benedictine University Eagle Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
