NORMAL, Ill. (Sept. 19, 2011) - The North Central College women's golf team took on the largest competitive field it has seen yet this season on Saturday and Sunday, taking part in the Illinois Wesleyan University Fall Invitational at Ironwood Golf Course. The Cardinals turned in a strong second round for the third straight 36-hole event, placing eighth overall.
In an event that featured several of the nation's top team and a large complement of low scores, seventh-ranked Washington University (Mo.) wound up claiming the team trophy. The Bears staked themselves to a large early lead with an opening-round 300 on Saturday, then finished with a 317 on Sunday to complete a four-stroke victory over second-ranked DePauw University (Ind.)
The Cardinals put up a score of 339 on Saturday and headed into Sunday's second round 13th in the 26-team field. North Central, however, vaulted up the leaderboard with a final-round total of 326, its second-lowest round of the 2011 fall campaign.
Washington's Hannah Buck was the individual champion at the tournament, finishing with a four over-par total of 148 to post a two-stroke win over teammate Olivia Lugar and Camila Romero of DePauw. The Cardinals' top individual finishers, tied in 28th place, where
Mary Kate Rohn and
Marisa Miko, each of whom finished with 163.
Rohn played a pivotal role in North Central's rise in the standings on Sunday, following her first-round 87 with a Sunday total of 76. Her second-round score was her lowest collegiate 18-hole round by four strokes and was the third-largest second-round improvement in the 132-player field. Miko, the Cardinals' top golfer on Saturday with a total of 81, came back with an 82 on Sunday.
Alayna Dufour shot 86 on Saturday and 83 on Sunday to place 57th with a score of 169, and
Mallory Carr completed the North Central scoring by placing 71st with 174. Carr shot 89 on Saturday and 85 on Sunday.
The Cardinals travel to Decatur, Ill., on Sept. 24-25 for the Millikin University Fall Classic at Red Tail Run Golf Course. Play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on both days.
