Feb. 27, 2016 - The North Central College men's track and field team secured six first-place finishes and set three meet records in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday, though the Cardinals' 15-year string of victories in the meet did come to an end at Al B. Carius Track.
The Cardinals totaled 175.50 points in the meet, finishing behind Augustana College's winning total of 189.50. Carthage College placed third with 102 points.
North Central swept the top three spots in two events, setting meet records on both occasions.
Tim Vazquez emerged with a strong stretch run to break the CCIW and track records in the 5,000-meter run, clocking a time of 14 minutes, 25.39 seconds. He was followed across the line by teammates
Zach Plank (14:35.91) and
Ken Hoffman (14:53.13). The Cardinals also claimed the first three positions in the 60-meter hurdles, as
Adam Lundquist lowered the meet record and his own school record with a time of 8.17 seconds.
Zion Mason placed second (8.46) and
Kyle Hilton finished third (8.50).
North Central took the first two places in the pole vault, as
Luke Winder cleared a meet-record height of 17 feet, 5 1/2 inches and
Spencer LaHaye finished second with a clearance of 15'7". The Cardinals' distance medley relay team of
Zach Hird,
Peyton Piron,
Jake Runnion and
Aron Sebhat was victorious in a time of 10:02.54, and Sebhat later added a win in the mile run (4:11.67), followed by Hoffman in third place (4:18.32). Plank won the 3,000-meter run in 8:23.89.
Third-place finishes also came from Runnion in the 800-meter run (1:55.21),
Daniel Spaccapaniccia in the 200-meter dash (22.64) and
Adam Poklop in the high jump (6'5"). Spaccapaniccia and Piron also teamed up with
Ben Nordman and
Zach Kirby to finish third in the 4-by-400-meter relay (3:18.60).
The Cardinals travel to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
