Apr. 3, 2021 - The North Central College men's track and field team made its long-awaited return to outdoor competition with a flourish on Friday, winning 10 of the 20 contested events and sharing first place in the First Chance Invitational. The Cardinals hosted the meet at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
North Central and Washington University in St. Louis each scored 196 points to share first-place honors in the four-team event. The University of Chicago scored 142 and Elmhurst University finished with 26.
Two Cardinals achieved performances which placed them among the program's all-time top 10.
Jamauri Spivery won the 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 10.85 seconds which ranks fifth in North Central's outdoor history and is the program's fastest time at the distance since 2001.
Taylor Sadkowski, meanwhile, achieved a nearly 40-foot personal best in the hammer throw to place second with a distance of 162 feet, nine inches to move into sixth in school history.
The Cardinals swept the first-place finishes in the distance events.
Gabe Pommier and
Tim Bertulis led from wire to wire to prevail in the 1,500-meter run (3:54.77) and the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:36.78), respectively, with performances which currently rank among the top 10 nationally at the NCAA Division III level.
James McGlashon made use of a strong stretch run to win the 5,000-meter run in 15:10.97 and
Matt Jett and
Matt Boelke closed the night by going 1-2 in the 10,000-meter run with times which rank 10th (31:25.30) and 11th (31:26.14) in the nation.
Nick Janca cleared 6'7.50" in the high jump to win the high jump and claim the third-highest mark nationally thus far. First-place finishes also came from
Gavin Carr in the pole vault (13'11.25"),
Riley Hughes in the discus throw (142'0"),
Michael Stanley in the 400-meter dash (49.25) and
Kendall Johnson in the triple jump (44'10.75").
Hughes also finished second in the shot put (42'11"), as did
Erik Musgrave in the 400-meter hurdles (56.07). Third-place showings came from
Jason England in the pole vault (13'5.25"),
Jacob Miller in the long jump (21'2.50"),
AJ Lehman in the 400-meter dash (54.29),
Kase Leday in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.52),
Cole Paulline in the shot put (40'4.25") and
Drew Guimond in the 10,000-meter run (33:31.19).
The Cardinals are scheduled to send groups to the Benedictine University Invitational on Friday and the WashU Triangular on Saturday.
