LISLE, Ill. (Apr. 9, 2021) - Paced by a pair of double first-place finishers, the North Central College men's track and field team claimed first place out of 11 teams in Friday's Benedictine University Invitational at the Village of Lisle/Benedictine Sports Complex.
The 20th-ranked Cardinals totaled 160.5 points to finish ahead of runner-up Wheaton College (139) and Lewis University (133.5).
Gabe Pommier slashed seven seconds off of last week's personal best in the 1,500-meter run to prevail in a time of 3:47.29 which ranks first among all NCAA Division III competitors this season and second in North Central's history. Pommier followed with another lifetime best to win the 800-meter run, hitting the line in 1:52.98 to take the victory by more than two seconds. Riley Hughes, meanwhile, won the shot put with a personal-best mark of 47'8" and closed out the meet by winning the discus throw (138'3") as well.
Cooper Hoffmann led a 1-2-3 Cardinal finish in the 5,000-meter run, winning in 15:53.29 just ahead of teammates Jeff Glatz (16:00.30) and Logan Schaefer (16:14.45). In the 3,000-meter run, Matt Jett and Matt Boelke came in third (8:48.00) and fourth (8:48.11).
Jamauri Spivery, Michael Stanley, Maceo FIndlay and Kendall Johnson teamed up to place second in the 4-by-100-meter relay (42.18). Stanley clocked a personal best of 48.75 seconds to finish second in the 400-meter dash and placed third in the 200-meter dash (22.14), while Johnson finished second in the triple jump (46'0.50") and Spivery placed fifth in the 100-meter dash (10.96). Others scoring second-place points with lifetime-best efforts were Erik Musgrave in the 400-meter hurdles (54.27) and Taylor Sadkowski in the hammer throw (163'5").
Musgrave also placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.05), as did Jason England in the pole vault (13'5.25"), while additional fifth-place efforts came from Dylan Combs in the javelin throw (128'11") and the 4-by-400-meter relay team of Findlay, Musgrave, Ben Piotrowski and AJ Lehman (3:34.83).
The Cardinals travel to compete in the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 17. Competition at McCully Stadium is set to begin at 3:45 p.m.
