KENOSHA, Wis. (Sept. 12, 2023) - Enjoying vast improvement over its season-opening effort and its performance in the same event a season ago, the North Central College men's golf team established a new 36-hole program record in the Strawberry Creek Classic, hosted by Carthage College Monday and Tuesday at The Club at Strawberry Creek.
The Cardinals placed sixth in the 21-team field with a total score of 598, surpassing the previous North Central standard of 600 set in Carthage's Tim Kopka Memorial Tournament on Sept. 11-12, 2015. Hope College (Michigan) won the team trophy with a two under-par score of 574, giving the Dutch a 15-stroke victory over the host Firebirds. Central College (Iowa) placed third (594), followed by Carroll University (595) and Calvin University (597).
North Central sat fourth in the field after the first round on Friday with a score of 295, the lowest by a Cardinal team since the Millikin University Fall Classic on Oct. 3, 2015. Leading the way were
Zachary Lunde and
Mitchell Mazzei, who carded identical one under-par scores of 71, while
Brendan Joy turned in an even-par 72. Joy led the way Tuesday with a score of 74 while Lunde and Mazzei each finished with 75. The trio finished with identical totals of 146, tying for 11th place out of 118 finishers and matching the fifth-lowest 36-hole total in school history.Â
"This group has been working hard throughout the summer and into this season to improve all areas of their game," said head coach Alyssa Gaudio '11/M '13 Guss. "Their desire to achieve makes them exciting to coach. I am very proud of their performance and how hard they worked to finish it out."
Harold Dobernecker of Central finished eight under-par at 136 to prevail in the individual competition, coming in two strokes ahead of Hope's Liam Casey. North Central's contingent was rounded out by
Braden Estes in 68th (160) and
Cole Martin in 95th (167).
Mitch Boryszewski, competing as an individual, placed 104th (172).Â
The Cardinals head back north of the state line Sept. 22-23, competing in the Midwest Region Classic, hosted by Benedictine University at Brighton Dale Links in Kansasville, Wisconsin.
