KANSASVILLE, Wis. (Sept. 26, 2023) - Continuing to post some of the best competitive results in the program's history, the North Central College men's golf team claimed a 10th-place finish in the 40-team Midwest Region Classic, held Friday and Saturday at Brighton Dale Links.
The Cardinals turned in a total of 308 strokes in Friday's opening round, followed by a 298 on Saturday which matches their eighth-lowest 18-hole score all-time. North Central's 36-hole total of 606 ranks sixth in school history and is eight strokes shy of the program record of 598 the team posted in its previous tournament, the Carthage College Strawberry Creek Classic. No. 5-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University won the tournament with a total of 580, finishing two strokes ahead of Carthage, while Millikin University and Wheaton College tied for third at 590.
Macalester College's (Minnesota) Luke Blankinship won the individual competition with an eight under-par score of 136, placing one spot ahead of Illinois Wesleyan's Rajveer Sethi. Both individuals turned in six under-par scores of 66 in Saturday's second round. The Cardinals'
Zachary Lunde finished in a five-way tie for eighth place out of 208 finishers with a one over-par total of 145, a career best which matches the third-lowest 36-hole score in North Central's history. Lunde was one of 14 players to record an eagle during the tournament, doing so in Friday's first round on the par-5 16th hole.
Mitchell Mazzei followed an opening-round 76 with a one under-par 71 on Saturday, recording four birdies in the final nine holes, to place 13th overall (147).
Braden Estes and
Brendan Joy posted identical scores of 159 to place 104th in the field, while
Cole Martin placed 141st (162). Competing as individuals,
Mitch Boryszewski finished 98th (158) and
Derek Olson placed 118th (160).
The Cardinals travel to Weaver Ridge Golf Course in Peoria, Illinois Tuesday for the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Preview Tuesday. Play is set to begin at 10:00 a.m.Â
