PEORIA, Ill. (Sept. 27, 2023) - Matching its finest 18-hole round of the fall season, the North Central College men's golf team placed ahead of six College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin foes in Tuesday's CCIW Preview at Weaver Ridge Golf Course, finishing just seven strokes off the pace of first-place Illinois Wesleyan University.
The Cardinals turned in a total of 295 to match the score they posted Sept. 11 in the Carthage College Strawberry Creek Classic, the fifth-lowest 18-hole score in the program's history. Illinois Wesleyan won the event with an even-par score of 288, and the Titans' 'B' and 'C' teams placed second (290) and third (294), respectively.
North Central has now posted three of the top 10 18-hole scores in its history and set a new 36-hole record at the Strawberry Creek Classic with a total of 598. The Cardinals' 18-hole record of 290 strokes was set Apr. 13, 2013 at the Millikin University Weist Foundation Classic.Â

Mitchell Mazzei made a strong bid for individual medalist honors, carding a season-best score of 68 to finish four under-par and just one stroke behind first-place finisher Bobby Beaubien of Illinois Wesleyan. Mazzei vaulted up the leaderboard with four straight birdies on holes nine through 12 and recorded just one bogey, coming within a single stroke of the North Central individual 18-hole record of 67. The record was set by Sergio Ronchel Salas '22 at the Benedictine University Quad Apr. 9, 2022.
Cole Martin overcame three bogeys in the first five holes and shot one under-par for the final six to tie for 10th place in the field with a one over-par 73, while
Brendan Joy shot 75 to tie for 20th.
Braden Estes placed 38th with a score of 79 to round out the Cardinals' scoring, while
Mitch Boryszewski finished 46th (82) to lead the second North Central team in the competition.
North Central closes out the fall portion of its schedule Oct. 9-10 at Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis, as they take part in the Wabash College Invitational.
