Jan. 13, 2024 – The North Central College men's track and field team began their 2024 season by hosting two teams in the annual Cardinal Opener at Al. B Carius Track on Saturday where the Cardinals took a dominant first team victory.
North Central finished with a team score of 136 trailed by the University of Chicago with 123 and the Illinois Institute of Technology with 35 points.
North Central had four program top-ten performances between
Anthony Zajac,
Martin Egbo,
Jayden Leiseand
Marcus Caselberry. Zajac took first in the weight throw with a distance of 16.59 meters (54 feet, 5.25 inches) which ranks third in the Cardinals' history while Egbo took third place with a mark of 15.34m (50' 4") which ranks ninth all-time.
Caselberry won the 60-meter dash in a time of 6.94 seconds which breaks the program's freshman record of 7.04 set by Robert Lott in 2011 and notches a new program second-fastest time.
Jahron Williams followed in second place (7.08) and
David Flint in third (7.13). Caselberry also won the 200-meter dash in 22.53 seconds and placed third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.51). Leise, meanwhile, won the triple jump with a distance of 14.44m (47'4.50") which ranks seventh in the program's history.
North Central secured the top three positions in the 3000-meter run between
Owen Christy in first (9:12.15),
Gabriel Ham in second (9:13.55), and
Bryce Chamberlin in third (9:15.74). In the 4x400 relay an electrifying team effort took the Cardinals to first place with
Tyler Piron, Lehman,
Keydric Fulton-Wilson, and
Jake Juneau putting up a time of 3:30.02.
The Cardinals took the top two spots in the pole vault as
Anthony Divenere placed first and
Joel Jaquinde finished second with identical clearances of 4.10m (13'5.25").
Colton Oleson cleared 1.93m (6'4") to place second in the high jump and
Jacob Everix was the runner-up in the mile run (4:18.64), while additional third-place finishes came from
AJ Lehman in the 200 (23.50),Juneau in the 400-meter dash (53.03) and
Prentice Myles in the long jump (6.34m, 20'9.75").
The North Central College men's indoor track and field team continues their 2024 campaign at the Aurora Grand Prix on Friday, Jan. 19 at 4 p.m. at the Gately Indoor Track and Field Center.
