AURORA, Ill. (Mar. 30, 2024) -Â Consistency was the buzzword for the North Central College men's golf team at Aurora University's Spartan Madness event Saturday, as the Cardinals placed second in the one-day, 36-hole event at Orchard Valley Golf Course.
The Cardinals turned in a score of 303 in the opening round, followed by a 304 in the second round, to finish with a final total of 607 which trailed only Aurora's finish of 583. The Spartans' Scott Boyajian won individual medalist honors with an even-par effort of 144, closing with a second-round 68.
North Central was paced by Mitchell Mazzei, who opened with a 75 and finished with a 74 to place fourth overall (149). Mazzei owns a stroke average of 73.93 per 18 holes thus far this season, putting him on pace to establish a new program single-season record. The current record of 74.50 was set by Sergio Ronchel Salas in 2020-2021.Â
Cole Martin shot a season-best 36-hole score of 150 (74/76)Â to place sixth overall, while Zachary Lunde tied for 12th (78/77-155), Brendan Joy placed 16th (80/77-155) and Braden Estes came in 19th (75/84-159). Estes' opening-round score is an 18-hole season best.
The Cardinals travel to Normal Apr. 5-6 for the Illinois Wesleyan University Invitational. Friday's first round will be played at Ironwood Golf Course, followed by Saturday's second round at D.A. Weibring Golf Course. Click HERE for the full 2023-2024 schedule.
