Mar. 30, 2024 - The North Central College men's track and field team opened up the outdoor season with a bang hosting the First Chance Invitational in Naperville, Ill. The Cardinals also sent runners the Washington University (St. Louis) Distance Carnival and the Stanford Invitational.
In Naperville, the Cardinals saw a lot of success on and off the track.
Matt Lewis took second in the 100-meter dash by only .07 of a second (10.89). Not only did Lewis place second, but his run tied for No. 7 in the program's outdoor top-10 records.
Kal Hoppe placed first in the 3000-meter steeplechase in nine minutes and 28.82 seconds. Meanwhile, teammate
Luke Cerwin finished right behind him in second (10:00.32). The 1500-meter run saw tight competition.
Owen Dare finished the run in second place (4:00.35), followed by
Gage Nielsen in third place (4:02.64).
Matthew Shimenetto placed third in the 5,000-meter run in 15 minutes and 26.93 seconds. Also placing third were
Keydric Fulton-Wilson in the 400-meter dash (51.06) and
Bryce Chamberlin in the 10000-meter run (32:42.84).
North Central took second in both the 4-by-100-meter relay and the 4-by-400 relay. The 4-by-100-meter relay of
Damarius Allen,
Corey Phillips,
Mark Bavaro, and
Cole Bradshaw clocked a 43.31. In the 4-by-400-meter relay
Jake Juneau,
Keydric Fulton-Wilson,
Tyler Piron, and Andrew Lehman clocked a three minute and 28.26 finish.
In the field,
Anthony Zajac finished first in the discus throw (140'5", 42.81m) as well as the hammer throw (173'1", 52.77). Zajac's discus throw went down as No. 3 in the program's outdoor top-10 list.
Jayden Leise led the triple jump in first place (45'5", 13.84), and in the high jump, Cole Oleson finished in third (6'2", 1.88).
Yasnier Rojas took first in the javelin throw (162'9", 49.60), and
Vincent Puelles placed third in the javelin throw (159'6", 48.63).
Anthony Divenere finished first in the pole vault (15'1", 4.60), while
Joel Jaquinde was part of a three-way tie for third place.
The Cardinals program finished first in the 11-team field. Meanwhile, North Central also sent a small group of runners to St. Louis for the Distance Carnival hosted by Washington University (St. Louis).
The 5000-meter run had 270 runners participate in an effort to clock the best time. Leading the Cardinals was
Logan Tanttu in No. 14 (1:53.67), followed by
Luke Hoffmann in No. 24 (1:59.97).
Additionally, the Cardinals sent
Braden Nicholson,
Connor Riss, and
Max Svienty to compete in the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
In the 5000-meter run,
Braden Nicholson placed 14th (14:09.37) while Riss followed behind finishing in 21st (14:35.95). The lone Cardinal in the 10000-meter run was Svienty. Svienty clocked a time of 29 minutes and 6.60 seconds to finish in No. 19
Next weekend (Apr. 5 and Apr. 6), North Central will partake in the Chicagoland Championships hosted by Elmhurst University.
