May 14, 2021 - A pair of victories in the distance events highlighted the North Central College men's track and field team's efforts in the Dr. Keeler Invitational, hosted by the Cardinals at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium Thursday and Friday.
Matt Boelke turned in a first-place finish in Thursday's final event, the 10,000-meter run. The senior eclipsed his previous personal best in the event by 45 seconds and prevailed in a sprint to the finish over runner-up Caleb Pyle of Maryville University (Missouri). Boelke currently ranks 17th-fastest nationwide among all NCAA Division III competitors in the 10,000.
Gavin Carr cleared 14 feet, 3.50 inches in the pole vault to claim second place on Thursday, as did Nick Janca in the high jump (6'4.75"). Fourth-place showings came from Jason England in the pole vault (13'9.75") and Taylor Sadkowski in the hammer throw (166'7").
Gabe Pommier won the 1,500-meter run on Friday, emerging from the back of the pack with just over a lap to go and covering the final 400 meters in 56.09 seconds to outrace Hope College's Nicholas Hoffman to the finish line in 3:49.84. Pommier continues to own the Division III national lead in the event with a time of 3:47.29 recorded Apr. 9 at the Benedictine University Invitational.
The 4-by-100-meter relay team of Kendall Johnson, Michael Stanley, Maceo Findlay and Jamauri Spivery placed second Friday in a season-best time of 41.27 seconds, moving up to No. 3 in the program's history and No. 9 nationally this season. Stanley later lowered his personal best in the 400-meter dash with a second-place time of 47.75, moving up to No. 5 all-time at North Central and fourth nationwide. Stanley closed the meet by placing third in the 200-meter dash (21.52), again establishing a personal best with a time that ranks 10th nationally.
Fifth-place finishes came from Spivery in the 100-meter dash (10.82) and Dylan Combs in the javelin throw (114'0"), while Riley Hughes finished sixth in the discus throw (141'3").
North Central hosts its final competition before the Division III Outdoor Championships, the Gregory Invitational, Wednesday and Thursday.
