To qualify for the United Soccer Coaches (formerly known as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Team Academic Award, teams must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and their institutions must be current United Soccer Coaches members. The award was instituted in 1996.

To be nominated for the Scholar All-Region Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout his career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; be nominated by an institution that is a current United Soccer Coaches member; be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution; be in his second year at the current school if he is a transfer student; and submit an official copy of a certified transcript.
